HUASHENG Showcases Advanced HiPIMS Coating Technology at ICMCTF 2026

2026-08-21

From April 19 to 24, 2026, HUASHENG participated in the 52nd International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF 2026) in San Diego, California.

As a leading international conference in thin-film deposition, coating characterization, and advanced surface engineering, ICMCTF brought together researchers, engineers, technology developers, and industrial manufacturers from around the world.

This event marked HUASHENG’s first participation in ICMCTF and represented an important step in the company’s continued engagement with the global coating technology community.

Connecting Coating Technology with Industrial Applications

At ICMCTF 2026, HUASHENG’s objective was not simply to introduce coating equipment. The focus was on exchanging ideas about how advanced PVD and HiPIMS coating technologies can address practical manufacturing challenges.

Discussions covered coating structure, deposition process control, surface quality, coating adhesion, wear resistance, and the performance requirements of cutting tools and precision components.

Rather than treating technical knowledge as a barrier, HUASHENG emphasized open communication, application-oriented discussion, and collaboration across the coating industry.

Technical Exchange Led by HUASHENG R&D Director Felix Chen

HUASHENG R&D Director Felix Chen represented the company during the technical sessions, engaging with coating specialists, researchers, equipment manufacturers, and industrial users.

Drawing on HUASHENG’s experience in coating equipment development, coating process research, thin-film characterization, and cutting performance testing, Felix introduced the company’s latest progress in PVD and HiPIMS coating technology.

The exchanges focused not only on deposition principles, but also on the actual requirements of cutting tool manufacturers, coating service providers, and precision component producers.

Why HiPIMS Technology Matters for Cutting Tools

As manufacturers face rising costs for tungsten carbide materials, obtaining more performance and value from each cutting tool has become increasingly important.

Although coating represents only one part of the complete tool manufacturing process, coating quality can have a significant influence on wear resistance, friction behavior, surface finish, coating adhesion, machining stability, and overall tool life.

HUASHENG’s technical presentation explored how advanced HiPIMS process control can improve coating performance and support more efficient use of high-value cutting tool substrates.

Compared with conventional sputtering processes, HiPIMS technology provides a higher degree of ionization, giving coating engineers greater control over film density, microstructure, adhesion, and surface quality.

GFOUR HiPIMS: Greater Control over Coating Structure

The technical content presented by HUASHENG included research related to its GFOUR HiPIMS coating system.

By combining HiPIMS deposition technology with advanced pulsed-bias control, the GFOUR system allows coating engineers to adjust important film characteristics, including:

  • Coating density and microstructure
  • Columnar and nanocrystalline film architecture
  • Surface smoothness and droplet formation
  • Residual stress
  • Coating hardness and toughness
  • Film thickness and coating uniformity

Adhesion at cutting edges and complex geometries

Studies involving AlTiN and TiN coatings demonstrated how process parameters and pulsed-bias voltage can be used to influence coating structure and mechanical properties.

This flexibility is particularly valuable when different applications require different balances between hardness, toughness, stress, surface quality, and coating thickness.

Application-Oriented Coating Development

The presentation also examined common coating challenges found in precision cutting tools and molds.

For precision-ground inserts, coating detachment at the cutting edge and excessive surface droplets can negatively affect machining performance and workpiece finish.

For thread taps, manufacturers need to balance wear resistance, coating adhesion, uniform thickness, and chip evacuation performance.

Micro-tools present additional challenges because small cutting edges and narrow chip evacuation grooves are especially sensitive to droplets, uneven film growth, and coating stress.

HUASHENG’s HiPIMS research focuses on achieving low-stress, smooth, and droplet-free coatings for applications including:

  • Precision-ground cutting inserts
  • Thread taps
  • Micro-tools
  • Milling cutters and drills
  • Precision molds
  • Complex-shaped industrial components

From Process Development to Performance Validation

HUASHENG supports its coating equipment development with an integrated R&D and testing system.

The company’s technical workflow covers coating process development, thin-film characterization, mechanical property analysis, and cutting performance evaluation. Research methods include coating morphology analysis, coating structure examination, hardness and stress testing, wear analysis, milling tests, and turning tests.

This application-oriented approach helps connect laboratory results with industrial production requirements and enables coating processes to be evaluated under realistic machining conditions.

A Presentation That Exceeded Expectations

HUASHENG’s presentation was scheduled toward the end of the conference, when many attendees were expected to have already moved on to their next commitments.

However, the room was nearly full, and the presentation received a highly positive response.

The strong attendance and active discussions reflected growing interest in HUASHENG’s PVD and HiPIMS coating technology, as well as the industry’s demand for coating solutions that combine technical innovation with practical manufacturing value.

A Presentation That Exceeded Expectations

From Technical Accumulation to International Recognition

ICMCTF 2026 was more than a technical presentation for HUASHENG. It was an opportunity to listen, exchange ideas, understand different market requirements, and build meaningful connections across the international coating community.

HUASHENG will continue investing in PVD coating equipment, HiPIMS process development, thin-film characterization, and industrial application research.

From long-term technical accumulation to growing international recognition, this is only the beginning.
