HUASHENG Presents HiPIMS Coating Technology at SVC TechCon 2026

2026-08-21

From April 25 to 30, 2026, HUASHENG participated in the 69th Annual SVC Technical Conference in Long Beach, California.

SVC TechCon is an important international platform for vacuum coating, thin-film deposition, surface engineering, and industrial applications. During the conference, HUASHENG R&D Director Felix Chen delivered a technical presentation on advanced HiPIMS coating equipment for high-performance cutting tools.

Improving Tool Performance amid Rising Tungsten Costs

As tungsten and cemented carbide material costs continue to rise, cutting tool manufacturers face growing pressure to increase the value and service life of each tool.

Felix explained that cutting tool performance depends on several connected factors, including substrate material, tool geometry, pretreatment, coating process, post-treatment, and machining conditions.

Although coating represents only one part of the total tool cost, it can have a major influence on wear resistance, machining stability, surface quality, and tool life. Improving coating performance is therefore an effective way to obtain greater value from high-cost carbide tools.

Why HiPIMS for Cutting Tool Coatings?

A key part of the presentation focused on High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering, commonly known as HiPIMS.

HiPIMS generates a highly ionized plasma through short, high-power pulses. Compared with conventional sputtering processes, it gives coating engineers greater control over coating density, microstructure, adhesion, residual stress, and surface quality.

These advantages make HiPIMS suitable for precision cutting tools that require:

  • Dense coating structures
  • Smooth and droplet-free surfaces
  • Strong coating adhesion
  • Controlled residual stress
  • Adjustable hardness and toughness
  • Uniform coverage on complex geometries

GFOUR HiPIMS and Advanced Pulsed-Bias Control

Felix also introduced HUASHENG’s GFOUR HiPIMS coating system.

By combining HiPIMS deposition with advanced pulsed-bias control, the system enables more precise adjustment of ion energy and coating growth. This allows coating engineers to modify film density, thickness, hardness, toughness, stress, and microstructure according to different application requirements.

The presentation included research on AlTiN and TiN coatings, demonstrating how process parameters can influence coating structure and mechanical properties.

Application-Oriented Coating Development

The presentation examined several common cutting tool coating challenges.

For precision-ground inserts, coating detachment and surface droplets may affect cutting stability and workpiece finish. Thread taps require a balance of wear resistance, adhesion, uniform thickness, and smooth chip evacuation. Micro-tools are particularly sensitive to coating stress, droplets, and excessive film thickness because of their small cutting edges.

HUASHENG’s GFOUR HiPIMS technology focuses on producing dense, smooth, and low-stress coatings for applications including:

  • Precision-ground inserts
  • Thread taps
  • Micro-tools
  • Drills and milling cutters
  • Precision molds
  • Complex industrial components

Supported by R&D and Application Testing

HUASHENG supports its pvd coating equipment development with integrated coating process research, thin-film characterization, and cutting performance testing.

The company evaluates coating morphology, hardness, crystal structure, residual stress, adhesion, friction, wear, and machining performance. This application-oriented approach helps connect coating research with actual industrial production requirements.

Advancing Industrial Coating through Global Exchange

SVC TechCon 2026 gave HUASHENG the opportunity to exchange ideas with international coating experts, cutting tool manufacturers, coating service providers, and industrial users.

HUASHENG will continue developing HiPIMS equipment, coating processes, and application testing capabilities to help customers achieve smoother coatings, reliable tool performance, and greater value from every coated tool.
